worker benefit packages. Includes instruction in labor
history, policies and strategies of the labor movement,
union organization, labor-management negotiation, labor
law and contract interpretation, labor economics, welfare
and benefit packages, grievance procedures, and labor
policy issues.
Landscape
architecture. Pre
pares individuals for the practice
of landscape architecture. Includes instruction in site
planning and engineering, environmental impact, garden
and landscape art and design, horticulture, and applicable
regulations.
Landscaping
management. Prepares individuals to procure,
plant, and maintain grounds and indoor and outdoor ornamental
plants. Includes instruction in equipment maintenance
and facilities management.
Latin.
The study of the language, literature, and culture of
the ancient and Medieval Latin-speaking peoples, including
Classical Roman Latin, related ancient Italic dialects
and languages, and Medieval Latin and its derivatives.
Latin
American studies. The history, society, politics,
culture, and economics of Mexico, the Caribbean, and
Central and South America.
Law and
legal studies. Programs that describe the theory,
history, and application of the rules of conduct by
which societal relations are formally structured and
adjudicated.
Law enforcement/police
science. Prepares individuals to perform the
duties of police and public security officers, including
patrol and investigative activities, traffic and crowd
control and public relations, evidence collection and
management, basic crime prevention methods, and weapon
and equipment operation and maintenance.
Law (J.D.).
Prepares individuals for the practice of law
and for advanced study in jurisprudence. Includes instruction
in the theory and practice of the legal system, including
the statutory, administrative, and judicial components
of civil and criminal law.
Leather/upholstery.
Prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge
and skills to fabricate and repair all types of upholstery
and leather goods.
Legal
administrative assistance. Prepares individuals
to perform the duties of special assistants and/or personal
secretaries for lawyers, judges, and legal counsels.
Includes instruction in business and legal communications,
filing systems and records management, legal terminology
and research methods, and professional standards and
legal requirements.
Liberal
arts and humanities. The study of the humanities
(literature, the arts, and philosophy), history, foreign
languages, social sciences, mathematics, and natural
sciences. Study of the liberal arts and humanities prepares
students to develop general knowledge and reasoning
ability rather than specific skills. Many two-year colleges
offer a major in liberal arts and humanities as preparation
for transfer to a four-year college.
Library
assistance. Prepares individuals to assist professional
librarians. Includes instruction in the principles and
procedures of library operation; library resources and
services; acquisition, cataloging, storage, and display
systems; and discovery and retrieval of materials.
Library
science. Includes instruction in the knowledge
and skills required to develop, organize, store, retrieve,
administer, and facilitate the use of collections of
information in such formats as books, documents, manuscripts,
machine-readable data bases, and filmed and recorded
materials.
Life
sciences. An overview of the scientific study
of living organisms and their systems.
Linguistics.
The study of language and the relationships among languages.
Includes instruction in psycholinguistics, anthropological
linguistics, historical linguistics, mathematical linguistics,
grammatical theory, philosophy of language, sociolinguistics,
and language and culture studies.
Logistics
and materials management. Prepares individuals
to manage and coordinate the logistical functions in
an enterprise, including acquisitions, internal allocation
of resources, and the handling and delivery of output.
Includes instruction in acquisitions and purchasing,
and resource estimation and allocation.
