Southern University and A&M College Southern University and A&M College had its beginning in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1880. Southern University has since established four additional campuses. The Baton Rouge campus is the flagship campus. The Southern University System is today is part of the only historically black Land Grant university system in the United States. Approaching the year 2010, Southern is meeting the needs of a more-than-ever diverse student population. The Center for International Education (CIE) is responsible for creating study abroad programs all over the world, collaborative research projects, and student exchange programs with international partner universities. Southern University is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), as well as by a number of professional accrediting agencies. Admission to Southern University is granted to the best-qualified applicants as determined by a selective admission policy. It offers bachelor’s degrees in 42 areas, 19 master’s, five doctoral, and two associate degrees. An average of 8,000 students are enrolled each year at the Baton Rouge campus.
