Brief Descriptions of Each Field of Study
Health and medical biostatistics. The advanced study of the health applications of statistical models and analytical techniques. Includes instruction in descriptive and inferential studies of human populations and the human organism and its biological components.

al laboratory technologies. Prepares individuals to perform diagnostic and analytical laboratory procedures that support medical research and practice.

Health and physical e

ducation/fitness. Programs that describe the study of human physiology and behavior as applied to sports, and the leadership and management of physical fitness and sports services.

Health education. Prepares individuals to teach health education programs at various education levels.

Health occupations teacher education. Programs that prepare individuals to teach specific vocational health occupation programs at various education levels.

Health physics/radiologic health. The study of the scientific measurement of radiation levels and dosages affecting human beings. Includes instruction in radiation dosimetry, the health effects of natural and man-made radiation; operation and maintenance of testing and monitoring equipment; and applicable standards and regulations pertaining to radiation emissions.

Health products and services marketing. Prepares individuals in marketing techniques specifically applicable to the health care supplies and services industry. .

Health professions and related sciences. Programs that prepare individuals to provide health care, do related research, or provide support services.

Health systems administration. Prepares physicians and other professionals to plan and manage health care systems and service networks. Includes instruction in planning and coordination, business and financial management, fund-raising and marketing, public relations, human resources management, and health law.

Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics. Prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, install, and service heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Includes instruction in diagnostic techniques, the use of testing equipment, and the principles of mechanics, electricity, and electronics.

Hebrew. The study of the language, literature, and culture of Hebrew-speaking peoples, including premodern and modern Hebrew dialects and derivatives.

Hematology technology. Prepares individuals to test and analyze blood samples under the supervision of a laboratory director or physician. Includes instruction in laboratory procedures and hematology; conducting quantitative, qualitative, and coagulation tests on cellular and plasma blood components; and equipment operation and maintenance.

Higher education administration. The study of the principles and practices of administration in colleges, universities, and higher education systems. Includes instruction in higher education economics and finance, curriculum, faculty and labor relations, student services, institutional research, and marketing and promotion.

Hispanic-American studies. The history, society, politics, culture, and economics of Hispanic Americans in the United States, including Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and other groups.

Historic preservation and architectural history. The architectural design principles and building techniques used in historic structures and environments, and the process of saving and restoring old buildings and districts for contemporary use and enjoyment. Includes instruction in architectural history, building conservation techniques, real estate, land use, and tax laws and codes.

History. The study and interpretation of the past,including the gathering, recording, synthesizing, and analyzing of evidence and theories about past events. Includes instruction in historiography, historical research methods, and studies of specific periods.

History teacher education. Prepares individuals to teach history at various education levels.

Home and custodial service. Prepares individuals for occupations related to commercial housekeeping and cleaning operations and for providing housekeeping services to paying clients and homebound individuals.

Home and office products marketing. Prepares individuals in marketing techniques applicable to hardware, building materials and equipment, and household supplies.

Home economics business services. Programs that cover the relationship between the economic environment and the home and family.

Home economics education. Prepares individuals to teach vocational home economics at various education levels.

Home economics, general. The study of the relationship between people and aspects of their environment, such as food, clothing, housing, and finances.

Home furnishings and equipment products and services. Prepares individuals to advise and assist clients in selecting and installing home furnishings. Includes instruction in selecting and purchasing home furnishings and equipment, and in floral design, accessory construction, textiles, and upholstery.

Horticultural services. Prepares individuals to produce, process, and market plants, shrubs, and trees used principally for ornamental, recreational, and aesthetic purposes and to establish and manage horticultural enterprises.

Horticulture science. Study of the cultivation of garden and ornamental plants, such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, and nursery crops. Includes instruction in specific types of plants, plant breeding, landscaping, and the management of crops throughout the plant life cycle.

Hospitality administration/management. Prepares individuals to serve as general managers of hospitality operations. Includes instruction in the management and operation of the travel and tourism, hotel and lodging, food services, and recreation facilities; hospitality marketing strategies; and management of franchise operations.

Hospitality and recreation marketing. Prepares individuals in marketing techniques applicable to a wide variety of hospitality and leisure industry settings.

Hotel/motel and restaurant management. Prepares individuals to manage facilities that provide food and/or lodging services to the traveling public. Includes instruction in purchasing and storage of supplies, facilities design, personnel management, marketing and sales promotion strategies, and convention and event management.

Housing studies. The study of the social, economic, and aesthetic aspects of housing and other environments. Includes instruction in planning, designing, furnishing, and equipping households and in the behavioral, developmental, public policy, and cultural issues related to households.

Human resources management. Prepares individuals to manage the development of human capital in organizations and to provide related services to individuals and groups. Includes instruction in personnel policies, sex roles, civil rights, human resources law and regulations, motivation and compensation systems, recruitment and selection, and job training programs.

Human services. Programs that prepare individuals to help those in need of assistance through support, advocacy, mediation, or care. Students learn how to interview clients, collect information, implement treatment plans, consult with other workers and agencies, solve problems, and advocate for clients.
