Brief Descriptions of Each Field of Study
Dairy science. The biolo gical theories and principles that apply to the production and management of dairy animals and the production of milk products.

Dance. Prepares individuals to express ideas, feelings, and/or inner visions through the performance of one or more of the dance disciplines, including ballet, modern, jazz, ethnic, and folk dance. Includes the study and analysis of dance as a cultural phenomenon and instruction in choreography, dance history and criticism, and dance production.

Dance therapy.

Prepares individuals to employ dance as a tool to assist patients in overcoming physical disability, resolving emotional conflicts, and enhancing communication with others.

Data processing technology. Prepares individuals to use computers and associated software packages to perform a variety of tasks, including text processing, number processing, graphics, and data base management.

Demography/population studies. The systematic study of population models and phenomena and related issues of social structure and behavior. Includes instruction in mortality and fertility, migration, mathematical and statistical analysis of population data, and applications to economics and government planning.

Dental assistance. Prepares individuals to assist a dentist or dental hygienist. Includes instruction in chairside assistance, patient preparation, dental office functions and laboratory procedures, and dental radiography.

Dental hygiene studies. Prepares individuals to provide tooth cleaning and related oral health therapies, either independently or in collaboration with dentists. Includes instruction in basic preventive oral health care, dental hygiene therapy, patient examination and counseling, dental radiography. and local anesthesia.

Dental laboratory technology. Prepares individuals to make and repair dental prostheses and restorative appliances as prescribed by a dentist. Includes instruction in complete and partial denture construction, crown and fixed bridge fabrication, and customized porcelain and acrylic restorations.

Dental specialties. Advanced study by dentists or other medical doctors in dental practice specialties and related sciences such as oral biology, endodontics, orthodontics, pediatrics, periodontics, dental immunology, and dental pathology.

Dentistry (DDS or DMD). Prepares individuals for professional practice of dentistry. Includes instruction in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and abnormalities of the teeth and gums and related parts of the oral cavity; study of related anatomical and physiological principles, professional ethics and standards, and supervised clinical practice.

Design and visual communications. The theories and techniques for effectively communicating ideas and information to and packaging products for business and consumer audiences.

Developmental and child psychology. The study of the psychological growth and development of individuals from infancy through adulthood. Includes instruction in cognitive perceptual, emotional, and personality development; the effects of biological maturation on behavior; testing and assessment methods; and the psychology of aging.

Diagnostic medical sonography. Prepares individuals to perform diagnostic and monitoring procedures using acoustic energy, under the supervision of a physician. Includes instruction in patient preparation, ultrasound testing and examination procedures, sonogram evaluation, and equipment operation.

Diesel mechanics. Prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, service, and maintain diesel engines in vehicles, such as automobiles, buses, ships, trucks, railroad locomotives, and construction equipment, as well as stationary diesel engines in electrical generators and related equipment.

Dietetics. Program that describes the provision of nutritional services, menu planning, and diet consultation for individuals, families, and institutions. Includes instruction in planning and directing food service activities, diet and nutrition analysis and plan formulation, food preparation management, client education, and related services.

Drafting/CAD-CAM. Prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to plan and prepare scale pictorial interpretations of engineering and design concepts. Includes instruction in the use of precision drawing instruments, computer-assisted design programs, sketching and illustration, and specification interpretation.

Drama and dance teacher education. Prepares individuals to teach drama and/or dance at various education levels.

Drama/theater arts, general. The study of dramatic works and their performance. Includes instruction in major works of dramatic literature, dramatic styles, and the principles of organizing and producing dramatic productions.

Drama/theater literature, history, and criticism. Study of the literature, history, and analysis of theatrical productions and theater methods and organization. Includes instruction in the themes and archetypes in dramatic literature; the history of acting, directing, and technical theater; and specific historical and cultural styles and traditions.

Drawing. Prepares individuals to express emotions, ideas, or inner visions through representation by lines made on a surface. Includes instruction in eye-hand coordination, value, shape, perspective, figure and still-life drawing, and the use of such media as pen and ink, pencil, charcoal, pastel, and brush.

Driver and safety education. Prepares individuals to teach driver and safety education programs at various educational levels.
